Hiking

There are unlimited walking and hiking possibilities in the mountains surrounding Samoens.

Paths range from easy relaxed strolls on the valley floor, to lovely walks through alpine meadows, to more difficult elevated routes, but the scenery is always amazing.

A good starting point is Sixt Fer- a-Cheval, an area of outstanding natural beauty. You can drive to the national park here, only 10-15 minutes in the car from Samoens. There is a unique horse shoe shaped range of mountains, beyond which is Switzerland. Waterfalls flow endlessly, and at some times of year you can see as many as 30. You can walk on the flat through the Fer–à–Cheval, taking in the breathtaking scenery and looking for wildlife. There is a large good value restaurant at the entrance, or it’s a perfect place to take a picnic. This walk is suitable for all ages.

The Samoens tourist board has produced a helpful link of 10 highly recommended walks: Click here for more information.

One of the most special things to do during the summer is to hike to a mountain refuge, and spend the night there. Release your inner Heidi! The refuges around Samoens are not only set in the most fabulous locations, but they offer breakfast, a full 3 course evening meal and bed linen all included in the price. Children are welcomed in all refuges and in our experience; it’s one of the best things they will do.

Please see our Refuge Guide to some of the refuges in the Samoens valley.
